Last-minute Gift Idea - Simple Flower Earrings Tutorial

Here's another easy peasy gift idea that won't break the bank!

I bought some earring posts on Ebay just after my daughters had their ears pierced in September with the intention of making some cute Halloween earrings. We ended up buying the hook-style earrings at Walmart, so we could make dangling ghosties. They were cute, but then I had 24 posts just chilling, waiting for me to come up with something.

Then today I was wrapping gifts to mail to my sisters-in-law and wanted another small something to include. "Hmmm...I DO have those earring posts just sitting here. Maybe I could do something with them?"  thought I. Nothing cheesy. Something they could wear anytime.

I love this necklace from Little Miss Momma and have had the image from Pinterest floating around in my head for months, so it was naturally one of the first things I wanted to try with my earrings.

Her tutorial is great and just uses circles to make the poms. Feel free to try her version but using these smaller sizes to make the earrings. I chose to give the petals a bit more definition, but I love both ways, and the end result is very similar.

Small piece of felt
Fabric scrap (about 2" x 5" for one pair of earrings)
Sewing needle and thread (I don't recommend hot glue for this small of a project...unless you have fingers of steel)
Earring posts

You can purchase the posts at craft stores and Walmart in their jewelry section. Just make sure they have the flat, rounded ends and not the little loop to hang things on.

STEP 1:  Cut your felt into 1/2" circles. You will need two pieces PER EARRING, so 4 pieces for a pair.

STEP 2: Cut your fabric into 10 squares 1"x1" (5 squares per earring).

STEP 3: Cut out the clover-type shape by folding one square in half, then folding it again, and cutting out a heart shape out of the folded piece.

STEP 4: Once you have your pieces all cut out, thread your needle and make put your needle through the center of one of your felt circles.

STEP 5: Refold one of your flower pieces OFF CENTER from how you originally folded. This will give it more of a natural look.

STEP 6: Stitch your petals onto the felt right at the center. I turned the petals on their sides (so an edge faces the felt rather than the bottom or top facing the felt). Then do the rest the same way, working around in a circle. I alternated the folded side up, then the folded side down (that will make more sense when you start making them).

STEP 6: Secure your thread and cut off the excess.

STEP 7: Poke your post straight through the second piece of felt.

STEP 8: Put hot glue over the post and felt.

And sandwich the round post end between the two pieces of felt.

That's it!  You've made your very own ADORABLE earrings! I think I will be making these as gifts for my girlfriends as well since they were so simple ((and inexpensive)).

I also used a piece of cardboard and poked holes in it with a pen to make my own custom earrings holder to gift them on. ;)
